Joshua E. Newstat dedicated his entire legal career to protecting the rights of others, including the disabled and the accused. Prior to becoming a co-founding partner of the firm, Lessem & Newstat, Joshua spent five years as a deputy attorney in the Ventura County Public Defender’s office.
Joshua worked as a tireless advocate for the rights of the accused, the injured and the mentally ill throughout his career. As a result, he received an award and special recognition from the Ventura County Criminal Defense Bar Association for his outstanding contributions to the criminal justice system. He also served for six years on the Board of Directors for the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), where he volunteered his time unstintingly to help families during their time of difficulty.

Rachel Newstat Weinstein March 16 at 12:21pm · Joshua Newstat is the best father, brother, son, nephew, lawyer, colleague and friend. He is no longer with us here but continues to defend us all from above. He lived and loved better in 39 years than most do in 90. He is a success story and one of the great loves of my life.
His funeral is on Sunday, 3/20 at Eden Memorial at 11500 Sepulveda Blvd. at 1pm with home visit to follow at our cousin's in Encino. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers we are asking for donations to NAMI. We will have donation info to follow.

Be at peace Josh. You were an incredible man and made a huge difference in many people's lives. I knew you since elementary school, and you were always an overachiever. I knew you would always be the best at whatever you did. My sincere condolences to your family and friends. You will be missed and I will always say a prayer for you my friend.
I just want to go the beach one more time with Jadi and his sloppy, broken down boogie boards. If God could grant that... just one more day as ridiculous overgrown kids. I love him and he had/has so much love to share

We were so sad and shocked when we found out what had happened and wish we could've been there for you to try to reason with you and help you some way. Everything makes sense though, including all the behaviors and we just weren't familiar or aware that this had to do with depression and mental illness at the time. I felt extremely guilty because I didn't take you seriously when you joked about doing it and I should've notified someone and said something so they could've stopped you or at least got you the help that you ever so needed. I felt so ashamed and I should've seen the warning signs and taken you seriously when you had told me that you tried once before. At least you're in peace now, but I look back and think about the fun times we had and how it was nice to know you. I know it's been quite some time now... but you have been on my mind and I just wanted to say that we miss you and think about you a lot. Hopefully your watching down on us and know that you will be forever missed. Rest in Peace.
